Founded in 1996, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Chittagong is one of the leading centres of geographical research and education in Bangladesh. Our aim is to provide an outstanding education experience for each and every one of our undergraduate and postgraduate students, and for the Department to be a key research centre of excellence in commercial capital of Bangladesh. With 18 academics, 6 professional support, administrative and technical staff, 250 undergraduates and 50 postgraduates, we teach and research across the discipline. Our research engages with local, regional, national and global grand challenges and pressing environmental, urban and social issues such as climate change, disasters, geographies of health, coastal dynamics, land use changes, smart cities, risk regulation, water, human migration, sustainable development, resource management, remote sensing and GIS application for environmental management. We undertake field research across Bangladesh. The Department offers courses leading to degrees in Bachelor of Science (BSc) with honours, Master of Science (MS), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geography and Environmental studies.
We are fortunate to enjoy a superb research and teaching environment in wonderful natural surroundings, with top class laboratory and IT facilities in a supportive and collegial manner. In order to provide pragmatic practical skills, the department curriculum includes courses in environmental impacts assessment, environmental management, disaster management, topographic surveying, digital mapping, geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing. The Department has a number of facilities for advanced research works. These include ranges of maps, reference books, drawing and drafting equipment and cartographic apparatus. Currently the Department has four types of laboratories such as physical, environmental, cartographic and GIS.
Chittagong's Geographers are outward-looking and entrepreneurial, seeking to understand the social and environmental challenges different areas and people of Bangladesh are facing and demonstrating how geographers can make a difference. The majority senior academic staff of the Department have received training and advanced education from universities in North America, United Kingdom, Australia and Asia-Pacific region. The academic staff and researchers of the Department work collaboratively with NGOs, INGOs, UN agencies, sub-district, district, ministries of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and universities across the world. The Department organizes seminar, conference and workshops on regular basis. The Students of this Department take part in sports, cultural and other co-curricular activities. Over the last two decades, our graduates made their career positions in NGOs, INGOs, UN organisations, city planning, Bangladesh Civil Services, Bangladesh Defence Forces, Cadet Colleges, corporate industries, universities at home and abroad.
